The Coming Revolution
in Writing and Reading
Preliminary Script
Chapter III, For the Eyes, the Ears, or Both
Micromovie sequence:
1.
In this chapter you will meet
the only human character in the movie.
He is Mu Man,
the inventor of interactive movable type.
Mu Man will demonstrate a-v-simultext,
the presentation mode in which readers
have printed text and speech
presented simultaneously.
2.
MU MAN WILL APPEAR IN THIS MICROMOVIE AND WILL SPEAK AT 100 WORDS PER MINUTE, THEN AT 200,300, 400, 500, 600, AND 700 WPM - AND FINALLY AT 50 WPM. WHEN THE A-V-SIMULTEXT PRESENTATION IS COMPLETED - AND WITH THE LAST FRAME STILL ON DISPLAY - AN UNSEEN NARRATOR WILL SAY:
While the delivery at 50 words per minute may have been frustratingly slow for you, think how helpful such a presentation rate might be for someone just learning to read.
3.
THIS SCENE WILL PRESENT A STATIC MUDOC SPECIFICATION PANEL SHOWING THAT THE TEXT IS TO BE PRESENTED AS A-V-SIMULTEXT WITH WORD-BY-WORD TEXT ADVANCES, WITH EACH WORD FRAMED AS IT IS SOUNDED, AND WITH THE TEXT DELIVERED AT THREE PHONES PER SECOND. AN UNSEEN NARRATOR WILL SAY:
"You will now see a three-line mutext panel presented as a-v-simultext. It will be advanced one word at a time with each word framed as it is spoken. The text will be spoken at the rate of three phones per second, that is, three speech sounds per second."
EACH SPECIFICATION WILL BE HIGHLIGHTED AND FLASHED AS IT IS CITED.
4.
5.
THE NEXT PANEL WILL BE ANOTHER A-V-SIMULTEXT DEMONSTRATION WITH FRAMING, BUT WITH THE FRAMES ADVANCED A MUGLYPH AT A TIME. WHEN THE FOLLOWING SPEC PANEL APPEARS, AN UNSEEN NARRATOR WILL SAY:
"You will now see another a-v-simultext demonstration, but with each muglyph framed as it is spoken."
6.
7.
THIS SCENE WILL SHOW HOW READERS CAN HAVE INTERACTIVE TEXT ADVANCED A ROW-AT-A-TIME. IT IS AN OPTION THAT SOME READERS WILL CHOOSE FOR GENERAL READING, BUT MORE OFTEN IT WILL BE USED AS ATRAINING TOOL BY THOSE WHO ARE JUST LEARNING TO READ OR BY THOSE WHO ARE TRYING TO IMPROVE THEIR READING SKILLS. THE DEMONSTRATION WILL BE PRECEDED BY THE FOLLOWING SPEC PANEL THAT SHOWS THE INITIAL SPECS FOR THE PRESENTATION. WHEN THE SPEC PANEL IS SHOWN AN UNSEEN NARRATOR WILL SAY:
"You will now see interactive text advanced a row-at-a-time AND a muglyph-at-a-time at the same time."
[AS THE SPEAKER SAYS "ROW-AT-A-TIME" THAT BOX ON THE SPEC PANEL WILL FLASH - AND WHEN HE SAYS "MUGLYPH-AT-A-TIME" THE MUGLYPH BOX WILL FLASH -THEN BOTH WILL FLASH SIMULTANEOUSLY.]
"The first three rows will be presented as a-v-simultext at 12 phones per second with each muglyph framed as it is read. The last three rows will be presented without speech sounds and at a visual rate of four muglyphs per second with each muglyph framed as it is scheduled to be read."
MICROMOVIE 8 WILL THEN BE PRESENTED.
